never rely on your cell

...phone alarm. It might just be me. I can be a heavy sleeper at times depending on what went on the previous day. So I usually wake up @ 6 a.m. and leave by about 6:30. I had clinicals this morning and my alarm didn't wake me up. I ended up waking at about 6:40. but i did almost 90mph on the freeway and fortunately no highway patrol. made it just in time to the hospital 5 minutes late :). For some reason we started talking about amazing insects and animals that roam this planet. Here's what we managed to come up with
recluse spider- being bit by this spider will give you necrotizing fasciaitis (sp?). or just kill off the flesh in your skin on affected area.
vinegroon- spider/scorpion look a like. I forgot why it was so deadly but it just is.
coconut crab- claws big enough to grab a coconut. Steve-o in jackass made one pinch his @$$. now that's a vise grip.
and
pistol shrimp- I remember learning about this shrimp at 14th annual CFC YOUTH conference. The shrimp cocks back its claws like a pistol and releases all the potential energy. That potential energy heats up to the temperature of the sun and delivers a devastating blow to its prey, thus killing it. pretty neat.

i fell in love with kanye's robocop performance and decided to learn how to play it on the uke. it was pretty simple but i'm not much of a vocalist. people said to put it up anyway. so here goes.

lap-chole

laparotomy cholecystectomy :). say that 5x fast. I don't know about you, but its pretty difficult for me. At clinicals yesterday, I got aggressive, or ascertive about wanting to get into the operating room. We had a lap-chole, which was supposed to take about an hr. The procudure is a non-invasive surgery where the surgeon removes the gallbladder using small incisions on the abdomen area and fishing his way through using a high-tech camera scope. before we got in there, surgeons started yelling at our O.R. tech because of the radiology department being short staffed. We had three techs scheduled. 1 for the emergency room, one for the radiology department downstairs and one for the O.R. got pretty hectic but the tech i was with just kept his cool. very professional of him to do that. so things worked out and the procedure started. about an hr after we started, doctor said we needed to open her up because the procedure was more complicated than it was. Then they did, I got to observe them work around the underlying anatomy and see everything live. I remember watching a lot of this stuff on discovery channel, my mom would tell me to change the channel because of how gross it was. Now I stand behind the table watching it live. pretty insane. she ended up losing 2.5L of blood or more. it was pretty crazy. I'm glad I got in there to observe everything. Out came the gallbladder with a couple of stones that had to be remove from the biliary tract. Pretty crazy for my first O.R. procedure. I have yet to be yelled at by the o.r. staff. hopefully i can be "thick skinned" about it and just keep my cool.

clinicals

another early day of clinicals. funny, I woke up early and wanted breakfast. Told Pat that i was gonna meet up with him at the cafe. So I actually made it to the hospital early this morning and had a hearty breakfast of bacon, omelet, and home seasoned potatoes. I usually drink coffee in the morning but we only had barium wax cups. David put the coffee in there and it melted the wax right out from the outer layer as well as the inner. Wax started mixing with the coffee which wasn't very appealinng. Dave tossed it, Pat drank it, I ignored it. We did a lot of chest x-rays as usual. BIG NEWS today was that there was a shooting at our sister hospital, St. Rose Sienna Campus. Don't know how many people were hurt, last I heard was 2. They closed the ER there for investigation and brought their patients to our hospital. Pretty crazy how stuff like that happens. I hope no one else got hurt though. Today, I got to "TIP" a patient. Yeah, if you guessed Barium ENEMA study. then you are correctamundo. It wasn't as bad as people say it would be. I'm just glad the patient didnt expell the barium on my first tipping experience. Some foul odor because a little bit of her waste went into the tubing. other than that, it was an incomplete exam but I helped Dan finish it, as well as the other students.

broken camera

pretty gay. my sony w-50 that i owned since o6' just broke on me. hopefully i can get a replacement that's similar to that camera some time soon cuz it did serve me well. in the mean time. I'll put up its condition in a little bit.

***update with pic. apparently the shutter button snapped off along with the spring that gives it the spongy button feeling. but "with a little bit of iffort and some tape" you save money and tape it back on. but now i cant play with the zoom button. hah! so gay.

Storytellers: Kanye West on VH1

Thought I'd do some channel surfing yesterday night and I managed to stumble upon ray J's show on VH1. They got some hot girls there like the one who just got kicked off. I think caviar was her name, but she had an exotic accent. at the same time she did seem very high maintenance. Right after the show hopped on Storytellers with Kanye west. And I gotta say it was one of best performances by far. Got me watching the whole thing. If they do re-run that show, which i'm sure they will because vh1 is owned by mtv and mtv re runs everything, then I highly recommend that you watch it :)
